What is Art Therapy?

Art therapy is a unique and creative form of counseling led by trained professionals with master’s-level expertise. Like other counselors, Art Therapists study psychological theories and therapeutic techniques, but we also receive specialized training in understanding visual perspectives, symbolism, and how to use creative tools to support emotional insight. In simple terms, we help you explore how you see things—whether it’s a situation, an interaction, or your interpretation of an experience. Through visual thinking and creative processing, we guide you in accessing and expressing your inner world in ways that words alone can’t always capture.

Importantly, art therapy isn’t just about creating pictures. It’s a flexible and adaptable approach that incorporates many different visual tools—like timelines, pie charts, mind maps, or concrete visual metaphors—to help you organize thoughts, understand emotional patterns, and process change. These techniques can make abstract feelings more tangible and allow you to literally see the parts of your story that may need care, reflection, or attention.

How does it work? By creating a safe and supportive space, I encourage you to explore difficult concepts and the emotions connected to them. Whether we're using imagery, diagrams, or symbolic expression, art therapy offers a unique pathway to clarity, helping you shift perspective, deepen understanding, and move forward with more awareness and confidence.
